During the 20's a new and prominent addition to the American Fine Arts was jazz. Duke Ellington was a Jazz musician and composer from Washington D.C who started off as a sextet band leader which in time grew to a 10 man band. Duke sought out many talented and unique musicians such as Bubbler Miley Who used a plunger to make a "wa-wa" sound, Joe Nanton who introduced the trombone growl,trumpeter Cootie Williams, cornetist Rex Stewart, and alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. He has made hundreds of recordings, appeared in films and radio, and has toured Europe, and has earned 12 Grammy's only living to receive 9. Duke Ellington was born in Washington D.C to a middle class family, at the age of 7 he started learning piano and at the age of 15 composed his first song "Soda Fountain Rag" he has received many honors like 16 honorary doctorate degrees, the french legion of honor, and a star on the hollywood walk of fame. And on May 24, 1974 Duke Ellington died from lung cancer and pneumonia.

Ernest Hemingway was a very famous author with a very interesting writing style. Hemingway liked to write personal experiences about his time in the army or stories of soldiers, hunters, and other tough people who went through hardships. One of his first novels The Sun Also Rises (1926) shows this as it was about his experiences as a expatriate american in paris, Another famous work from him about a soldier is his novel A Farewell To Arms (1929) which was a study of a medical officers disillusionment in World War 1 and his abandoning of the Italian army front. Ernest Hemingway helped to expand the writing style of the newly introduced at the time of modernism. Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21 1899 in Cicero Illinois (later being named Oak Park) and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and in northern Michigan in a cabin where he learned to hunt and fish, in high school he participated in his schools newspaper and when he graduated worked for the Kansas City Star.During World War One Hemingway joined the Italian Army as a Ambulance driver later getting injured and receiving the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery. Ernest Hemingway died on July 21 1961 from suicide in his home in Ketchum.
